A look back at 2020

I would like to send my season’s greetings to all of you at the beginning of the year 2021. I hope everyone is in good health and safe under the current pandemic of COVID-19. I assume that all our members are still suffering and under difficult situations to run your own clinical practice.

Looking back at the year 2020, our activities started by the first combined meeting of our board and council members at Chengdu, China, in early January just two weeks after the news of outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan. Though Chengdu is not so close to Wuhan, we were enforced to change our schedule especially to social events outside the venue. We kept staying the hotel all the time on January 10 and 11 during the entire meeting. Even though we felt some fear of unknown virus spreading from a local city in China, the first joint meeting achieved a great success with sharing new ideas and hopes among the participants about our future directions and activities of AO Spine Asia Pacific. I really thank to all the participants who traveled from all the parts of Asia Pacific region for their active participation and dedication to our community.

Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, many AO related international and local meetings were cancelled such as Global Spine Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Spineweek in Melbourne and many other national level meetings. The virus made our face-to-face events impossible and enforced us to change the strategies on education events in the entire region. To compensate the loss of on-site education events, we created our online education program in early March 2020, which we called “ONED” program in Asia Pacific. The “ONED” program consists of 5 components such as in-League program, Case-based 3D Bone Model Online Course, Inter-Fellow Webinar, Council Webinar and Hang-out of the Week Webinar. Despite the sudden change to our education platform, all online meetings were well attended by our members. Overall, we had 103 event days, 415 faculty involved and 17,049 participants for our events in 2020. I would like to show my sincere gratitude to all the faculty members and participants to make these events successful.

As to the membership, as of December 2020, the total number of paid members in Asia Pacific region was 2,225, which was a 6.4% increase comparing to the previous year and still the number one region in the whole world. I am proud that more new members joined our community even under this difficult situation with COVID-19.

For the year 2021, it is still not certain whether we will be able to meet each other on site. It is sure, however, that we will be able to meet and learn from each other in different ways and make our interactions more active than ever. Please stay safe and healthy under this tough condition and get together sometime and somewhere in 2021.

A look back at 2020

While 2020 started with a peak AO Spine Asia Pacific Joint Committee Meeting in Chengdu on January 11, 2020 that was attended by three of our council members. It was exciting times and we as an organisation set high aims to integrate across councils, disciplines and various AO Spine fora; that, was the last of the travels for 2020. The year has ended with one certainty; a lack of certainty with travelling and the consequent impact on everything educational.

However, as an organisation and group we pivoted rapidly to the cloud and were able to organise numerous events at a regional level including a webinar on COVID-19 challenges on May 9, 2020 and the first AP Virtual Conference 2020 on June 6–7, 2020. All of this, on a background of postponing first and then cancelling our AUNZ principles and master’s courses scheduled for May and November 2020 respectively. While a setback, especially as AO Spine AUNZ was on an incredible trajectory following a very successful 2019 educational offering which culminated with our first ever hospital based seminar led by Dr Brian Hsu our dynamic Education (Ortho) Officer, held in November 2019 at St George Hospital.

We have had a series of elections held in 2020 to fill up council positions. I welcome Dr John Choi of Spine Ortho Clinic as Spine Centers & Fellowships Officer and in a more recent election Dr Dihan Aponso of Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital as Community Development Officer and Dr Jonathon Ball of Royal North Shore as Research Officer. I would like to thank all outgoing officers including Drs Mitchel Hansen, Kris Dalzell and Uphar Chamoli for their contributions to the organisation and look forward to their ongoing involvement as delegates and faculty.

I look forward to 2021 with hope and expect that our team will continue to come up with innovative solutions to impart education at all levels of spinal surgical training. I also hope that towards the end of 2021, as and when some travel is allowed, we may be able to meet in person. On that note I wish you all a better and healthier 2021.

A look back at 2020

The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 changed many aspects of our life. Its adverse impact on our academic events did not need to list. Thankfully, with the joint effort of our faculty, members and staff, we overcame the barriers and pushed our career forward. By pioneeringly introducing webinars and other online sources, we held 25 educational events, attracting over 10,604/ 335 participants online/ offline respectively. The number of our paid members even upturned by 21% during the time of hardship. We also offered plenty of top experts’ surgery videos online to benefit more young surgeons and created a platform to exchange experience between AO Spine members. 15 fellows were awarded because of their achievements and contribution to our community.

We have every reason to believe the final win in the fight of pandemic. We have every reason to anticipate the brighter future of AO Spine in China.

A look back at 2020

2020 has been a very challenging year to the entire world and to East Asia. Face-to-face events have been heavily affected after the Advanced Seminar in Singapore. In 2020, two educational events were successfully held. On May 9, East Asia Council has initiated and assisted AO SAP to organize the first AO Asia Pacific web-meeting “Web-meeting: Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic—From Crisis to the Future” to inform, update and draw consensus with experiences among Asia Pacific members to formulate optimal spine care during the early rapid evolving phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, AO SEA Council has introduced a spaceless platform and added value to our AO SEA members, AO SEA CaseChat is firstly introduced, an interactive WhatsApp group, to keep everyone abreast with the latest development in spine surgery. AO SEA also participated in AO SAP in-League program to share our surgical technique and experience with other countries in the region.

Although our events have been hindered by the external situation, with the introduction of CaseChat, our member strength has shown a creditable increase of 8% to a total of 334 paid members this year.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to every council member for their timeless efforts and commitment throughout these years despite their busy schedule. Thank you Dr Mohd Hisam Muhamad Ariffin, Dr Wattana Mahattanakul, Dr Gamaliel Tan and Dr Yen Jen Chen for your past 3-year support and welcome Dr Uei-Chyi Chuah, Dr Chiung Chyi Shen, Dr Chris Yin Wei Chan and Dr Paul Aarne Koljonen on board!

A look back at 2020

I bring you greetings from the Indian Subcontinent, and our young and efficient AO SIN Council.

This has been a tremendously eventful year for the entire world, and obviously our organization and our part of the world has not been spared. The year started on a very high note with the council meeting in Chengdu, and after that the world as we knew it changed dramatically.

The AO SIN Council recouped and took the pandemic head on. As our face-to-face courses were cancelled, we started an excellent online pathology based series in the first part of the year, and then went on to surgery specific video webinars. Our attendance has been very encouraging with AO Spine members from all over the world joining in. 33 educational events were held (67 faculty; 2,196 participants).

We have got used to the new virtual method of teaching, and hopefully next year can start some in-person and blended courses, as the pandemic does seem to be waning in our part of the world.

Our membership however grew by 13%, a much larger number than the average and we now have 653 paid members, a huge chunk of the AO SAP membership.

Our research and fellowship programs continued and we have awarded 18 fellowships for 2020 and sanctioned 3 new research projects.

2020 also saw our large democratic exercise of electing and appointing 72 delegate members in free and fair fashion, as well as 3 members at large for Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Thus AO SIN continues to take the challenge head on, and we will strive to fulfill our mandate in 2021.
