A look back at 2020

Congratulations to AO Spine Asia Pacific for the very special 2020—A life changing year for our generation, and a historic one for mankind.

Despite the extreme and unprecedented situation that 2020 put us through, AO SAP came out shining with a relentless march towards the goals set early this year.

AO SAP Spine Centers & Fellowships Committee, especially, achieved all the 3 targets that we had set ourselves for 2020, despite the massive obstacle of a pandemic leading to a complete worldwide lockdown.

The entire credit for this success story in adversity should go to our AO SAP Office staff, with a special shout out to Adele, and the Spine Centers and Fellowships Officers from all our 6 councils—Dr Mitchell Hansen, Dr Wen Yuan, Dr Yen Jen Chen, Dr Ankur Nanda, Dr Masashi Miyazaki and Dr Seung Won Park, who collaborated seamlessly to bring out:

  1. The Inter-Fellow Webinar that was launched in September 2020 and finished three episodes till the year end
  2. The Expert Meets Master program
  3. Newly defined fellowship programs: observer fellowship (2 weeks and below); visiting fellowship (3 weeks–8 weeks); long-term fellowship (9 weeks–12 months)

The road ahead is long, and we have lots to achieve, but our success in our first, most difficult year, will only spur us on into achieving greater heights. We will soon share with you our three targets for 2021.

Until then, three cheers to us!

Collaboration and networking has always been a hallmark of AO Spine Asia Pacific. Towards this end three AO Spine Inter-Fellow Webinars were launched in September and October 2020.

AO Spine Asia Pacific Fellows—who are our future AO Spine Asia Pacific torch bearers get into the thick of things—by presenting, teaching, and networking with their counterparts, from their fellowship spine centers, to fellows and mentors from other spine centers, across councils in the region. This exchange of knowledge is fruitful to all in multiple ways!

Learning opportunities for the more skilled and senior spine surgeons in Asia Pacific

Spine surgery is rapidly advancing its horizons, and treatment principles are changing at a pace that can get overwhelming. To stay up to date with the changes, it becomes critical for that practising surgeons to up their game and familiarise themselves with the best in category treatment protocols. Unfortunately, the more skilled and senior surgeons get the harder are the learning opportunities.

Education being the core commitment of AO Spine Asia Pacific, this need for a senior practising spine surgeon is recognized to update his/her skill sets in general or sub-specialty spinal care. The new program Expert Meets Master (EMM)—AO Spine Asia Pacific sub-specialty visitation program addresses just this.

Sub-specialties selected for year 2021-2022:
